Unusual Duck sighting Tuesday, June 9, 2009
A female Long-tailed Duck (formerly called Oldsquaw) in breeding plumage was spotted on the lower lake on Saturday, May 30, 2009. This duck winters in good numbers along the coast of Maine and breeds on small ponds and wetlands up on the tundra in Canada and Alaska.
Typically when they migrate north in spring they go a long way before putting down so it is an unusual sighting on a southern Maine lake.
In summary, a common bird in an unusual place.
Our thanks to Jim Gibson of Rochester, NY and his son who took the picture and Eric Hynes of Maine Audubon for help in identifying this duck and the species habits. |
