Milfoil Update  News Story
Wednesday, August 13, 2008

* Senator Susan Collins visited Little Sebago Lake on Tuesday, August 12, 2008 and donned her LL Bean boots for an informative tour and update on the milfoil removal program run by the Little Sebago Lake Association.
Carol Ann Doucette and Pam Wilkinson provided information, and Pam gave a hands on tour and demonstration of milfoil removal aboard Hippo2, one of the Association's two milfoil removal boats.

It was explained that over 25 tons of milfoil has been removed from Little Sebago Lake over the past two years at a cost of over $100K! This cost has been borne primarily by the Little Sebago Lake Association members and donors. During the months of May through October, the Association's two milfoil removal pontoon boats, Hippo1 and Hippo2, are in operation most days, weather permitting, from early morning to early afternoon. These boats contain a suction removal and separation system provided by a unique engineering solution from one of the Association members. As much as 56 bags of milfoil are removed in a single outing, and 300 bags of milfoil have been removed in a single week. Each bag is a 50 pound capacity onion bag, which is filled with 30-40 pounds of milfoil as it is removed from the lake bottom by divers and suctioned up with the removal system aboard the boat. Volunteers in Kayaks patrol and pick up fragments.

The areas of milfoil infestation are marked by green noodles, and areas where work has been completed by red noodles.
The milfoil is dried and then taken to the Gray town dump, where it is ground into compost available to residents.

Senator Collins is supporting a measure that would provide funding for a statewide initaitive and a freshwater marine laboratory.
